Last summer, I took a trip to Asheville, North Carolina. I was awestruck at the beautiful mountains! Upon returning to Alabama, I rediscovered the mountains that have surrounded me in the region where I was born, raised, and continue to live today. Whether we take a journey of miles, or take a journey of the soul...sometimes the journey makes arriving back home all the more sweeter...and we are quickly reminded not to take "the everyday familiar" for granted.

I remember traveling to New York City back in the late 1980's and taking the elevator to the pentacle of the World Trade Center. I was in awe...and frankly, a little scared! I don't know if it was all in my mind, but I honestly thought I could feel the building sway back and forth. I was mesmerized as I looked out the window! The people below appeared to be ants....walking as fast as they could to get from one point to another. As I made this piece, my memories from atop the World Trade Center re-emerged. As I hammered the circles into the copper, they began to take on the appearance of ants and people bustling around, colliding into one another, possibly without much thought. When 9/11 occurred, we were reminded of how the actions of one can affect the lives of many...even the world. I also remember in the days that followed, of how we were all united...and despite our differences, in some way, at that moment...as people, we were all connected.

"Home"- Hammered copper bowl with a natural patina. This bowl measures 5" in diameter.

This is the first bowl I ever created. I learned a lot from the process. Although it is a small bowl, it was labor intensive....it took lots of hammering, forming, and fire!!!. The unintentional marring in the middle of the bowl took on the image of a bird's nest. This piece reminds me of how God takes care of creatures large and small...but we/they have to do the work to make things possible...to make our place in the world...and to make our "home" in the world. Making our "home" in the world is not always easy. And like the bowl, we are constantly being hammered, formed, and refined by fire...with the hope of one day emerging into the vessel that was intended...imperfections and all.

"Firepit"

This piece is called "Firepit" because it reminds me of a most recent time when I have gathered with friends around a fire. There is something primal about gathering around a fire. As we are all drawn to the heat that the fire provides....somehow, we are reminded that as people, we all need the same things: food, shelter, safety, friendship, and love.
